  3. tests actually reflecting 
  4. individual differences in 
  5. perception? Suppose the test 
  6. consisted of a simple figure, 
  7. such as the one shown at left, 
  8. and observers were asked to 
  9. report what they perceived. 
  10. There is no reason to think 
  11. that individuals would differ in 
  12. their perception of it as a 
  13. shape. The difference comes in 
  14. the interpretation of the figure. 
  15. The novel shape might be said 
  16. to look like any number of 
  17. things, from an artistΓÇÖs palette 
  18. to an amoeba. That observers 
  19. would interpret the figure 
  20. differently is not surprising. 
  21. That such differences would 
  22. stem from differences in past 
  23. experience is also not 
  24. surprising. Nor perhaps is it 
  25. surprising that such 
  26. differences might reflect 
  27. differences in present need 
  28. states; for example, hungry 
  29. people might interpret the 
  30. figure as an item of food 
  31. because food would be on their 
  32. minds.
